Tooth Extraction

There are several reasons why a child or teen may need to have a tooth removed in order to ensure good dental health in the future.

If your child needs a tooth extraction, you should choose a dentist in the Waltham, MA, area with pediatric experience.

The pediatric dentists at Children's Dental of Waltham use a gentle approach when it comes to extractions and other dental care procedures.

When Is Tooth Extraction Necessary?

There are a number of situations in which Drs. Yelena Gutnichenko and Carmen Brambila may recommend an extraction to preserve or ensure your child's oral health.

Why Choose Us for Tooth Extractions

Our friendly Waltham, MA, pediatric dental team is empathetic and compassionate about kids' fears surrounding dentist visits. It is our job to put your child at ease.

Our highly educated dentists are trained to use a gentle approach for little folks when it comes to extractions.

Calming nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can be safely administered to help frightened or anxious children relax.

Our safe, clean waiting area is filled with fun toys and games.

We don't just extract a tooth and send a child home. We take the time to explain why the procedure is important for preventative oral care.

Our staff speaks many languages, making communicating with adults and children for whom English is a second language easier.

CareCredit® financing is offered to make any out-of-pocket costs more affordable.

At Dr. Gutnichenko's practice we found the most "customer-centric", professional, compassionate and technologically advanced care for our daughter, who presented with multiple challenges (we have been to quite a few offices before). Our whole family moved to them as a result; we have been their clients for years now, so glad it is a Family practice. Highly recommended!

What Is the Tooth Extraction Process?

Baby Teeth

Typically, your dentist will just need to rock the baby tooth back and forth very gently. As it loosens, it can be easily lifted from the socket. Numbing anesthesia may not be needed.

Surgical Extraction

Our goal is to remove a minimal amount of healthy bone or gum tissue to uncover a tooth. This allows our dentist to remove it with minimal impact to the surrounding tissue.

Sedation Dentistry

Before a surgical extraction, mild nitrous oxide sedation can be administered through a mask to keep your teen or child comfortable. The same sedation can be provided during simple extractions if needed. This can make the process easy and comfortable, even for patients with dental anxiety.

Recovery

Healing from a simple tooth extraction is relatively quick, but full recovery from a surgical extraction may take a few days. You'll be sent home with home care tips to ensure that healing goes smoothly. Contact us if you have any concerns.

Pain

There may be some soreness, so give your child any prescribed painkillers if needed (after wisdom teeth removal, for example).

Mild Bleeding

Your child may need to bite down on a piece of gauze to minimize bleeding after surgery. Your dentist may also place a few small stitches to close the wound.

Swelling

An icepack applied to the extraction area should help keep swelling to a minimum.

Diet

Your child should eat soft foods for a few days. Hard foods could open the healing extraction site.

Oral Hygiene

Avoid brushing the extraction area for 24 hours. That may dislodge the blood clot that forms naturally to aid healing.

Rest

Have your child rest and avoid strenuous activities for at least a day.

Follow-Ups

Keep all follow-up appointments so we can monitor healing. If a damaged permanent tooth was removed, we can discuss your restoration options as well.
