The Importance of Dental Exams for Children
Prevent Tooth Decay and Cavities
Tooth decay is among the most common chronic diseases affecting children in the United States. Preventative measures such as regular dental exams and cleanings are the best defense for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health-related issues. Dental cleanings are integral to healthy teeth and gums.
A Healthy Smile That Lasts a Lifetime
Introducing your child to dentistry at an early age can help them develop healthy attitudes toward oral health that can last a lifetime. The healthy smile that results from dental cleanings can also provide children with a sense of confidence and assurance. Your child’s dental visits are an investment in their overall health and well-being.
When Should My Child Start Visiting the Dentist?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth erupting — whichever comes first.
We welcome children at any stage, but here are some helpful age-based guidelines:
- Age 1–2: Early visits help us catch developmental concerns, get your child comfortable with the dental office, and give parents guidance on teething, diet, and brushing techniques.
- Ages 3–5: This is when regular six-month checkups become especially important. We’ll begin cleanings, apply fluoride, and continue building good habits in a fun, fear-free way.
- Ages 6–12: As baby teeth fall out and adult teeth emerge, we monitor alignment, recommend sealants or early ortho if needed, and empower kids to take ownership of their oral hygiene.
- Ages 13–20: We continue to provide age-appropriate care — including cleanings, exams, and cavity prevention — through the teen years and even into college.
It’s never too early to create positive associations with the dentist. Whether you’re bringing in a toddler or a teen, our team makes the experience educational, gentle, and even fun.

Simple, Safe, and Thorough A Step-by-Step Look at Cleanings and Exams
Before a cleaning, our dental care team will first examine your child's smile. This allows our dentists to evaluate the general state of the teeth and gums, as well as identify potential problem areas before getting started.
By adopting good brushing and flossing habits early on, children are more likely to have a healthy smile for life.
Families Depend on Our Waltham Dentists
For the first time, Miss SARA attended us, she is very kind, she knows English and Spanish. She was very close to my son. My son is very nervous when it comes to having appointments with the dentist, but with her he felt very comfortable and happy, willing to collaborate. Thank you miss, it's good to see how well you do her job. I'm sure the other girls do an excellent job

Our care doesn’t stop when you leave our office. Establishing strong at-home habits is equally important.
- For children under 8, we recommend you brush and floss for them — or at least supervise — until they can do it thoroughly on their own.
- Limit sticky snacks and sugary drinks between meals. Offer them water to rinse away bacteria.
- Before bringing them into our office for an appointment, make sure they’re well-rested and fed. Encourage them to bring a favorite toy or book to help them feel calm and prepared.
What Happens If My Child Has a Cavity?
Don't worry — our kind team is here to help. We will:
Reassure Your Child
If a child feels judged or they think they're in trouble, they may associate the dentist with unhappy emotions. We prefer to take an understanding approach. Cavities happen commonly, especially in baby teeth, and we'll make your child feel better with compassionate care.
Treat Your Child
First, we'll ensure that your child is completely comfortable using local anesthesia or sedation dentistry, if needed. Then, we'll clean your child's tooth and protect the area. We may use fillings, or in the case of more extensive decay, stainless steel dental crowns.
Educate Your Family
Maybe your child missed a spot while brushing. Or, they're having trouble flossing on their own. We can educate you and your family on techniques, dental products, and more, so that you can leave our Waltham office equipped to prevent tooth decay in the future.
