Dental Fillings

Even if kids practice good dental habits, issues like cavities, chips, or cracks can still develop.

Dental fillings treat tooth decay and other dental problems so kids can continue to enjoy good oral health for years to come.

At Children's Dental of Waltham, we use tooth-colored dental fillings to seamlessly restore our patients' smiles.

Why do parents choose our Waltham, MA, practice for their children's dental needs?

Are Dental Fillings Just for Cavities?

Many parents think cavities are the only reason why their child would need a filling. In fact, dental fillings can be used to treat a range of other dental conditions besides cavities, including a:

  • Chipped tooth
  • Cracked tooth
  • Root canal infection
  • Protect soft enamel

Types of Dental Fillings

At Children's Dental of Waltham, we use composite fillings to restore our patients' teeth. These tooth-colored, composite fillings offer a number of benefits over the amalgam and gold fillings of the past. Amalgam fillings are much more noticeable because of their silver appearance. In addition, amalgam fillings contain small amounts of mercury; while the amalgam material is considered safe, many parents prefer a mercury-free filling option.

If your child has suffered significant dental damage, we may recommend a crown instead of a filling. A crown completely encapsulates the tooth and will offer more strength and protection.

The Treatment Timeline

When patients come to our Waltham, MA, dentistry practice for fillings, they can expect several simple steps:

Numb the Area

We will gently administer medication to numb the teeth and gums in the treatment area.

Clean the Tooth

Next, we will clean the tooth and remove any signs of infection.

Place the Filling

We will place the malleable composite material in the tooth to fill in the cavity, chip, or crack. This material can be shaped and molded to the tooth to produce a natural-looking appearance and comfortable bite.

Cure the Filling Material

After we place the soft filling material, it needs to be hardened. We direct a special curing light at the composite material so it will harden and withstand the daily forces of biting and chewing.

Refine the Filling

To complete the treatment process, our dentists will test your bite and refine the shape of the filling to ensure your oral comfort when you are chewing or when your jaw is at rest.
